Child Labor

As we all know, poverty is definitely very present in our country. Of all our country’s major problem, poverty is the most difficult to minimize because of the economy of our country. We also know that children comprises about a third of overall population of the Philippines. And due to this financial suffering of Filipino families, children are forced to work at a very early age in order to support their families and survive in our country’s current conditions.

Child slave labor is being referred to as the illegal employment of children below 18 years of age in hazardous occupations in which underage children are being forced to manual labor to help their families mainly due to poverty.

Child slave labor is the Philippines is not an uncommon sight. And some children are already partaking in some form of labor as early as age 4 or 5 years old. In addition to this, recent news report that even children are already being use in the mining industry. We all know that explosives, particularly high and powerful kinds of explosives are very dangerous, especially to children which can lead to their end.

There are also times that I saw these children, age ranging from 2 to 5 years old, in the streets of Laoag and Batac. They are walking around and approaching people and begging for some money. And every time I see them, I can’t stop myself thinking that these children might be being used by some illegal organization that uses children disguised as beggars to collect money.

Why does our government can’t play down this act of child labor?

We, youngsters are referred as the “PAGASA NG BAYAN”. The future decider of what will be the status of our country in the future. Other may acknowledge this as a compliment but other may see this as a burden to us youngsters. But either way, child slave labor should not be tolerated and as much as possible it should be stop.

We know that the future of one country relies in the hands of the future generations. But this must not become a burden for us and the future generations to bear. If this will become a burden to us as early as childhood, then the reason why God creates each stage in our life will be meaningless. There’s a right time for every thing we must do. Each stage of our life should not be rushed because God create each stage in our life to build us to a better person one step at a time.
